Promoting British Values at Kilby St Mary's CofE Primary School

At Kilby St Mary's Church of England Primary School, we actively promote the fundamental British Values of Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs.
These values are embedded in our Christian ethos and daily life, helping our pupils grow into caring, responsible citizens who live out our school vision and values.

Democracy

We promote democracy by:

  • Encouraging pupil voice through School Council and Collective Worship.

  • Holding elections where pupils vote fairly for representatives.

  • Involving pupils in decisions about school life (e.g. playground improvements, charity choices).

  • Teaching about democratic processes in PSHE, History, and assemblies.

  • Modelling respectful discussion and debate in lessons and collective worship.

The Rule of Law

We promote understanding of the rule of law by:

  • Having clear school rules and behaviour expectations rooted in our Christian values.

  • Teaching the importance of laws through PSHE, RE, and visits from the police or local authorities.

  • Helping children understand consequences of choices and the importance of fairness.

  • Using restorative approaches to resolve conflict and rebuild relationships.

  • Celebrating positive behaviour through our reward systems and collective worship.

Individual Liberty

We encourage individual liberty by:

  • Creating a safe, supportive environment where all children feel valued and heard.

  • Encouraging children to make choices about their learning, play, and behaviour.

  • Teaching pupils to understand their rights and responsibilities.

  • Promoting self-confidence, self-esteem, and resilience through our curriculum and worship.

  • Supporting children to express their opinions respectfully.

Mutual Respect

We teach mutual respect by:

  • Embedding our Christian values into daily school life and relationships.

  • Modelling respect in the way staff and pupils speak to and care for one another.

  • Encouraging teamwork and collaboration across all areas of school life.

  • Recognising and celebrating achievements of all pupils.

  • Using PSHE, RE, and collective worship to explore respect for ourselves, others, and God’s world.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We promote tolerance by:

  • Teaching about a range of faiths and beliefs through our RE curriculum.

  • Welcoming visitors from different faith communities and visiting places of worship.

  • Celebrating cultural and religious festivals from a range of traditions.

  • Encouraging open discussion and understanding of differences in a safe, respectful way.

  • Ensuring our ethos reflects the Christian value of loving our neighbour.

At Kilby St Mary’s, we’re proud to be a Picture News Advocate School. Each week, we explore current news stories that help us think about the world around us, share our ideas, and link our discussions to our Christian values. Picture News helps us to be curious, confident and compassionate learners who understand that even small voices can make a big difference.
